SO FINE ME

Sorry I missed out on the normally daily post yesterday...it was one of those days. People don't usually understand that my job is more than just the three hours I put over the airwaves. I had meeting after meeting after meeting yesterday, and just barely found enough time to have a comprehensible program. I used to look at the Dilbert cartoons as parody...but I'm living it more and more each day.

Anyway...seatbelts. There are a few interesting points to be made...as I outlined on the program yesterday.

If we establish public policy on the basis of public safety (which it appears we want to move in that direction) we are empowering government to control our lives. I'm becoming more libertarian in this respect, in that the purpose of government has changed. Government is now in the business of keeping themselves in business. Here's how it works...

1. We decide smoking/speeding/seat belt use is a matter of public safety.

2. Moderate controls are place on the activity.

3. The decision is made that we authorize government to save us from our own choices...limiting personal responsibility.

4. It becomes a matter of public "health."

5. We now empower government to pose as "public health advocates" and continue to refine the method by which they enforce the law.

6. The argument now is over what level to set the controls...moderate controls disappear.

RESULT: A continued effort by government to "raise the bar" and advocate more safety...jobs for politicians.
