THE SIGNPOST AHEAD

The realtor sign goes out front today. I should have mowed again.

I had an interesting email exchange with someone in the business. I was seeking employment with his company, and he was moving on himself. We found out kind of accidentally, that it's a very small world indeed. Anyway, we got to exchanging a few things...including some of the stuff I have wanted to get off my chest for a while about my work in the past (I'm being cryptic on purpose). Man, I really let it fly...and it felt good. Good enough to make me come to the meaning of the whole situation...and possibly to give someone else a better understanding too. When it's safe to do so, I'll share.

Still more of you are finding out "what happened to Greg Alan" thanks to the piece in the newspaper, and once again, your kind words are appreciated. I know some of you have asked me to post the story rather than the link, but it wouldn't be legal without permission, so you'll have to view the story in the normal way. I try to write personally to each and every one of you and I hope you've received the replies. For a while there, I had to use a script when the initial flurry of emails kept arriving faster than I could respond. But, they're slowing down now and I'm averaging only about 5 or 6 a day. It's as I predicted and understood when it all shook down...that the hubub will soon burn out. I'm actually amazed that it's taken this long...usually, people don't invest a lot of their personal interest in a talk show host (or radio guy). I figured it would last a week, maybe two...and then things would die down and I'd be just another pretty face.

And, funnily enough, people are still donating to the cause...so far, about 200-bucks in the kitty. And no one wants to be identified, so I issue once again the blanket...

THANK YOU!

The family and I are using the money for good...I even used some of it to buy a couple of beers for one of the regular fans of the show. He wanted to say a final goodbye in person (and actually get to meet me within the confines of my personal life), so I had Guiness and he had Sam Adams. Other uses so far are groceries (obviously), and the preparations for the garage sale we'll be having.

Damn, I guess I have to help put up those silly signs with the baloons on them, eh? Well, at least it's work...

"I was seeking employment with his company, and he was moving on himself. We found out kind of accidentally, that it's a very small world indeed."

Yes, I'd say that's pretty damned cryptic Greg. "A small world indeed", what could this possibly mean?

Actually now that I read the Post and Fishwrap piece, I'm even more pissed off! What Clear Channel and WSC have such a low opinion of their listeners that they want to keep it light and fluffy instead of "dark and serious."

Why don't we just say; you people are too stupid to have your attention held by anything deeper than a parking lot puddle. ________ WSC and the horse they rode in on.

Ray

I think Ray got it right. WSC is lowering the bar. This guy Murphy is a major dolt. If Greg is a halogen on the bright scale this guy is definitely 20 watt (soft white). I guess they just wanted a new direction? Have the new guy talk sexual inuendo, bratworst, and Harley instead of Greg's edgey political discussion and throw in hours of idle mindless chatter about nothing and more nothing rather than risk "dark and serious" intellectual discourse. Every day that I have to listen to this bozo Murphy is another e-mail to the clever WSC management team.

Warren

"Light and Fluffy"?!? they meant braindead and moronic. My God, they've forced me to Rocky D, my head is going to explode!

Tim

Nobody "has to" listen to Murphy. I gave him a chance and I'm sorry, the show stinks. I don't even listen to the radio anymore driving home from work. I tried listening to "Radio Free" Rocky D. a few years ago and all that show is him screaming and bashing liberals. Even that is better than Murphy which is not saying much.

I am disappointed to read that WSC is not talking about why they kicked Greg to the side of the curb. Disappointed, but not surprised. They know they screwed up and believe me, this is one action that they will regret a few months from now when Murphy gets his show taken off the air after ratings plunge.

We obviously cannot bring Greg's show back. But we CAN send a message to WSC by not listening to their radio programs, particularly Murphy's. Hit them where it hurts. Trust me, if this guy, Murphy, and his show have ratings that drop significantly then his butt will be shown the door faster than you can think.

I am sorry that this happened to Greg. But you hear all kinds of stories like this all the time. If it helps make anyone feel any better, good people have gotten fired and turned around and proved the people that fired them wrong. Examples? Okay.

Sparky Anderson, former manager of the Cincinnati Reds. He led the Big Red Machine to 2 championships in 1975 and 1976. The team was one of the best in Major League Baseball history. A new general manager was brought in and some of the younger players backstabbed Sparky. He was fired soon thereafter. He was devastated, but he found employment a year later with the Tigers. 5 years later when the Tigers won the World Series it was Sparky who said, "I hope this proves all those people in Cincinnati wrong who said I couldn't manage."

Lee Iacocca was fired by Ford Motor Company after a run-in with Mr. Ford. He was devastated, too. He saw that Chrysler was struggling and did not think anyone could turn that company around. His wife told him, "Well, I'll bet Mr. Ford will be REALLY happy to hear that." That was enough motivation for him to work for Chrysler and turn them around.

Those two are famous, successful people in very different careers but the same rule applies to Greg. He got burned but he's a strong man and will bounce back. Trust me, a year from now, the people at WSC who made this awful decision will look back on it with great regret.

Greg, good luck to you and wherever you go, go out there and kick butt!

Greg,

It took me awhile, but I finally found out what happened to you. I don't tune in to the news that much. I suspected something was up when someone without a real name showed up on the radio in your timeslot. Sad to say, but I am trying to find something else to listen to on the way home from work now. I enjoyed listening to you. I always enjoyed your conversations with "Bob" from Summerville. I wish you and your family the best and God's blessings on your future endeavors.
