UPDATED 4/4: GOODBYE WMT

Friday was in all likelihood my last broadcast on-air...maybe. I was dismissed on Friday, so it's no April Fools as some of you have asked. Thanks for lending me your ears, Eastern Iowa.

I have been overwhelmed with emails and I cannot thank you folks enough. It has stopped me from climbing into a bottle...just kidding.

At the moment, I am considering my future in radio. There are some opportunities, one of which popped up on Monday. I will do my best to keep those that care informed, but in all reality - I will not be returning to radio in Cedar Rapids. I thank you for spending time with me, and recently, letting me know how much I have affected some of you.

I am attending to my number one job...being a husband and father. The provider part will be taken care of eventually. I have continued faith in what I am doing and how well I can do it. Your many comments have been proof of that.

This blog was never meant for much more than an additional outlet for my thoughts and as a billboard for my career. That may change at some point as I consider the cost and time involved in keeping it relevant.

I cannot truly speak of what transpired...many of you have asked. Radio is a very small community of people and I don't want to damage what future I have in it. Outside of that, I have been on the other end of terminations as well...and it's no fun. Companies today are truly frightened of wrongful termination lawsuits. Not that I would sue, but enough people have to force companies to give very generic reasons. In fact, when considering references for resumes, companies will only provide start date, end date, and attendance.

Thank you again for all of the emails. The comment area below is for those who want to post anonymously or otherwise, and I appreciate those as well.

I missed the show? Why might this be your last? I like your show and commentary.

You were working for a crap station anyway.

At least you aren't working at KZIA for Norton.

And at least you had some nice cuties at WMT to work around, like Ursula.

April Fools...

Sorry to hear you're gone. Always enjoyed your program. You were a huge upgrade from the previous afternoon guy.

Good luck.

Greg:

When you said you were moving in December I thought the worst. Now it really is the worst -- unless its an April Fools gag. You were the first really thinking radio personality that WMT AM has had in who knows how many years. You were the one to make people think in the morning -- and too bad if it made them mad. The demographics are changing for WMT -- you and Bob were part of that, and made the change for the good.

Let us know through this site or radio-info.com where you will be next. Hopefully its in the CR marketplace -- Hey maybe Sellers at KMRY will change his format to get local thinking talk radio on his station and de-emphasize or rebalance the format.

Keep up what you are doing -- its the right thing. Good luck to you.

A voice of reason that not was not only thought provoking and insightful, but also entertaining and often tongue-in-cheek funny.
You will be missed. We all await news of what is next for you.

I can't believe it.

Yes, I agree that you were the first person I've heard locally who was 'thought-provoking' on a principled basis. (Rather than "I feel this...I feel that...")

WMT has really hurt themselves by letting you depart.

I can tell that the morning demographic has already aged back to 15 years+ older than I am.

The host, the callers, everything seems to point to antiquity (and shrinking disposable income for those advertisers to tap).

Backwards is all I can say about WMT.

Greg, thank you for being forward looking.

You are already missed.

Keep us posted.

Gone?! Say it ain't so! Aargh!

Greg: I am so sorry WMT is going "another direction." It is worse to find out that the new direction is the same lame old direction now that Bob Bruce has returned. I guess I'll go back to listening to Sean Hannity on 1540. Hopefully you land on your feet and on the air in eastern Iowa so I can continue to tune in.

Darn you WMT!!! Darn YOU TO HECK!

Greg, I didn't find out about you being gone until I heard the different music and recognized that it was Bob Bruce's music. I thought maybe they had set something up so that he was somehow doing the show with you. Well I am glad to get to hear him again in the afternoons, I missed you more in the mornings and now, it seems, will have to wait until I find out where you end up being on and if I can still listen. I don't know what all went on to WMT's decision, but I think they have just shot themselves in the foot. The morning hasn't been the same without you :(
Kathy

I had to come here to find out what happened to you since I was out of town all last week. I have to
admit that I really missed Bob in the afternoon, but I really loved you in the mornings!!! I'm already tired of hearing "if you call in with the answer to this question, you'll win a SHINY NEW DIME." Any way you'll be back in the mornings?

Greg, WMT has really goofed. Bob Bruce or Tom Collins aren't even in your league. I found you to be very knowledgable and entertaining. WMT management will be hearing from me. I think if WMT management listens closely they will hear the collective 'click' of off buttons all over eastern Iowa. I really do wish you the best and hope that you end up on air in eastern Iowa. That radio station will definitely get me to 'click' the on button!!

Greg, I was very disappointed to leave the office this afternoon and hear Bob's voice on the radio again. Sorry, but he's too... "something" for me. I should thank the geniuses at WMT for a couple things. First, their incessant broadcasts of girls and boys state basketball led me to find Limbaugh live on KXEL 1540. Second, the Bob Bruce Show (I was so glad to see him go the first time) led me to Mike Bung's "On The Air" on KXEL (lousy politics, but an absolutely wonderful interviewer), followed by Bruce Williams. Now that you're gone, I don't have to miss those shows, and won't really have any reason to listen to WMT at all- except maybe school closings next winter- just so I don't have to crawl out of bed and check the websites. I am going to miss you.

Greg, I am sorry to see you go and be replaced by a three hour sports show. WMT should send their new morning guy back to accounting and put you back in that time slot. I am thankful I was able to hear you for a time and hopefully you will end up where I can continue to hear you. Best wishes.

Good. You're a puke. You sucked about as bad as Libaugh. You suckered everyone with your regular guy appeal and talking about inane things like music you are brave enough to admit you like. How brave. Do something worth while now like think about working for a living. Get your hands dirty. Then you can know.

Truth to power

Another rightie bites the dust.

Greg,
I was going to write something about going back to listening to KXEL but I see many have the same sentiments as I do. I don't know what happened, but they have made a big mistake, I thought it was a mistake to move you from the morning show, but this takes the cake. Hope to hear your voice again somewhere. P.S. if anyone from WMT is reading this, while I enjoy Bob Bruce, I will not be listening to your station any longer. I think in short order you will see the effects of your recent changes.

Hey D Gott:

Boys and Girls State Basketball is what Iowa is all about. Yes there are other choices for radio listening but apparently you must be from out of state.

And Greg, never mind the leftist pinko crap from the 8:16 pm blogger. He or she is still mad at losing both the 2000 and 2004 elections. Thank God that AlGore or Kerry wasn't president when 9/11 took place.

You keep doing your thing -- you are talented, smart and created. You will be fine.

Greg,

I thought you had an interesting program. I don't understand why you are being replaced. All we seem to get for choices to listen to, are sports, sports, and more sports. You discussed topics that were interesting. Why does anyone think you are right-wing? The left-right card is silly and tiring and very devisive and negative. Thought you were pretty much a balanced program host but guess other's had the wrong impression.

I will listen to other radio stations online. Don't have much for choices, locally, anymore.

Greg,

I've posted here before on this topic. Just wanted to encourage you to not delete the taunt that the 'compassionate leftist' posted here. It show's their true color (pink) and how their spelling prowess matches their thought process.

Truth to power?

Surprised he could remember the bumper sticker through his ganja hazed memory.

Friday I was listening to your show, and was so compelled by the subject that I found myself sitting in the van catching the last bits of commentary before commercial breaks, instead of doing my job like I was suppose to. When it came time to wash the vehicle at my company's warehouse, I turned the radio up as loud as I could so I could hear the show above the sound of the pressure hose. This is not the first time.

I guess I'm back to catching the last hour of Hannity on KXEL too... now that Bob is back with his sports talk show in disguise. Mike Bunge is a great interviewer... but whoever said "lousy politics" was RIGHT ON THE MARK!

I missed you when you left KCNZ, and now I'm going to miss you again.

...I still think you should use The Pixies on your NEXT opening... beats Van Halen.

Leah

Greg:

I tuned in after work, and what do I find on WMT but... Mike Hlas (yawwwwwwwwwwwwn) talking to... BOB BRUCE???!! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHH!

From the sound of it, Bob Bruce's being a total flake has cost you your job.

First, his leaving gave someone at WMT the lousy idea to push you to afternoons (maybe because they feared afternoon listeners might remember all too well how Randy Lee used to s*ck even more than Bob?).

Then, when Bob The Flake decides he doesn't like KTRS, he calls WMT. For some reason -- maybe they had some reason to think you're thinking of leaving, because you hate doing the afternoon slot? -- WMT decides he can have his old job back, leaving you without one because, in the meantime, WMT hired that "Tom Collins" guy to fill your morning slot. (Speaking of flakes, somebody please tell that guy his 'radio voice' is utterly ridiculous!)

At any rate, I'm extremely sorry to hear you're gone, and I really would like to see you get on at KXEL (their local programming is a total waste of a 50,000-watt signal IMHO) or KMRY (maybe Rick Sellers could be convinced to lose the 'timeless classics' in the morning?). Even KMJM (another waste but, that's where Bob Bruce *really* belongs) or WHO. Anywhere that we can hear and call you.

I'll be watching your blog and hope you and your family land on your feet with a job and a house -- hopefully the one you're in -- you love.

Some people aren't "Off their Feet" when let go from companies.

I've always found it offensive when folks assume everyone having a pink slip needs to get back on their feet. Some people are grounded enough that they remain on their feet despite turbulent life-events.

I'll give Greg enough credit, that's he been around the block enough, that he's solidly on his feet - until he indicates otherwise.

Only Greg and his family knows.

Best regards in your new transition Greg - exciting stuff will be happening for you!

So sorry to hear that you have left WMT. Your program was always thought provoking and quite often had me talking back at or agreeing with my radio. Your program made me think outside of what I have always believed and often made me see the other side of the arguement. While I enjoy sports and will keep listening to WMT from 4 to 7 each night for the lastest on the local, state and national teams, I feel my level of I.Q. will dip down a lot because my brain won't be inspired to work so hard anymore.

Thanks for all of your insight and best of luck with your future. You will be missed!

As a precaution, I am now instituting a policy of moderating the comments.

Unfortunately, some who relish other peoples' misfortune have taken the opportunity to post ugly and obscene material.

It was a better choice than the removal of all posts. Please ignore at your peril the previously posted link above.

Thanks for your mostly civil responses.

To "been pink-slipped before": Try not to be so easily offended, especially when it's so blatantly obvious no offense was intended.

To Greg: With your departure, local radio in the C.R. market has slid back toward its long-standing tradition of in-your-face mediocrity.

While Des Moines and Davenport have had top-notch conservative local talent for decades -- Jan Mickelson on WHO and Jim Fisher on WOC -- C.R. listeners are once again s-o-l. It's enough to make one wonder if C.R. aspires to be a suburb of Iowa City.

Who is Tom Collins? Is he the guy that tries to sound like a.... Howard Cosell?

We need more talk shows like Jan Mickelson's... on WMT.

Greg, you had your own unique qualities and now we are stuck with....sports.

Please pursue any opportunities at KXEL even if they don't have an opening -- you would compliment their programming. Also look at the recent KXIC changes (move towards CR-IC cooridor emphasis and the departure of Roy J.) there may be an opportunity for you there.

Also use your "low down" connections.

Your are still the best!

Greg,

Gotta be honest, I liked Bob and still do. I certainly liked you in the mornings and feel you are well read and take an active interest in state and national politics. I learned more about issues from your show than I would by just watching television or even reading the paper.

My only beef with you was how you tried to reinforce your arguments with contrived examples such as wanting to be able to marry your brother during the debate on an amendment for gay marriage.

I think you are smarter than that and you are at your best when you have concise arguments rather than trying to add entertainment value. It was comparable to O'Reily making a fool of himself throwing a fit about the people against Christmas. Again, you are smarter than that.

Whatever your future endeavors are, I am sure you will be successful. I wish you well.

Oh, and to the 10:10 pm blogger....like one of those guys couldn't point at a map and say "attack these guys". Please....

Greg,
I enjoyed listening to you on my morning drive. You always gave me something to think about. I cannot believe WMT has gone to the dark ages with their morning show. I am sure Tom is nice enough -- but quite honestly -- he hasn't given me a thing to think about, except how I enjoyed your morning show. Best of luck to you and your family.

Greg,

You in the morning and Bob in the afternoon was awesome. The new morning guy may be a good guy, but I can't listen to him. Bob is a bonehead, but I like him in the afternoons. Good luck to you and your family, you are a true American! God Bless!

Vinny

I was very disappointed to hear "that other guy" again today. It was a great joy to be a listener of your afternoon show. I don't have the time to listen to the radio in the morning so I missed when you were on WMT then but in the afternoons when I was out and about I really enjoyed listing to you. I have to say that WMT has lost a listener. Not only because I'm very disappointed that they let you go but I can't listen to "that other guy" for that long. I guess I'll go back to ESPN in the afternoons. Please keep the blog up. I'd love to be able to come here and read your thoughts.

Thanks for your service to the eastern Iowa community.

Greg,
While I don't agree with some of your tirades on your show, I most certainly enjoyed listening to your shows. However, I would simply suggest that you have been subjected to your employers whims. One of the things I (being a steadfast unionist) do not have to tolerate or accept. Now you can probably go find a good job as a greeter at Wal-Mart and probably make a little bit better than minimum wage. And Wal-Mart will no doubt direct you in how to recieve some medical aid from the state and federal levels. Oh, and hopefully they won't just decide to let you go.
In all seriousness, good luck, and I hope to here you again.

Well Greg, I can’t say that I’m sorry to see you leaving the afternoon show. The only downside is that once again we are subjected to the inane ramblings of Bob Bruce. I found offensive your anti-education rhetoric (“I never went to college and look at me”. Yes, unemployed) as if having a B.A. degree was an automatic entry into the Democratic Party. Being a local farm girl I am proud of my solid Mid-West values and of my education.
Of course being so offensive and speaking your sometimes narrow minded viewpoint could have been a masterstroke of marketing designed to get people listening. But having read your blog, I don’t think so.

The one consolation for you is that the new morning guy, Tom Collins is worse than you. If it weren’t for the morning local news updates, my radio would be permanently tuned into 1540.

Hope the door didn’t hit you in the bum on the way out!

Greg - Sorry to see you go. I have read all of the posts and I think I agree with most. Your comment that you wont be in the CR area is disheartening. I was hoping you'd find an opportunity nearby. But, with the way Iowa treated you - I guess I can't blame you. Bob and Tom (interesting...) may be nice guys but would be we please find some mental stimulation? I'm surprised the lefties that are posting arent educating you on the newest and greatest social entitlement program that they know about. But, then again, they probably realize that as a conservative, you probably wont be lying around feeling sorry for yourself so you dont really fall into their marketing demographic anyhow.

In any case - wherever you end up - best of luck and if it is in radio - let us all know where you are so we can demand that the station offer streaming audio on the internet.

As it is - WMT will get a holler from me as I'm off to 1540 KXEL to listen to Hannity and Mike Bung; lefty or not, at least Mike NON-comatose-inducing shows, guests and interviews.

Best of luck -

Lincoln

It is very quiet here since we have turned off WMT for good. You were the breath of fresh air that place needed and now you are gone.
You have so much talent and are so exciting to listen to. I am sure there will be many doors open for you. I even stopped listening to "Bob and Tom Show" when you were on. Well, I am back to Bob and Tom.

Greg, you were the best thing that WMT had going for itself. They were stupid to lose you, and they will receive a letter from me telling them so.

Bob Bruce is an annoying blowhard and I want to gouge out my eardrums with an ice pick every time I hear his annoying voice. Tom Collins has a horrible sense of humor. Neither of those guys even compares to your level of personality and abilities! WMT, if you're reading this, you just lost a faithful listener of 4 1/2 years.

I wish you all of the best as you seek your next position. I just wish it could be on the airwaves in Cedar Rapids!

I wonder if Bob Bruce knows how influential he's been in just 3 months.

When he left WMT, he ruined the morning show.

Upon returning, he ruined the afternoon show.

Is there any chance WMT is reading any of these comments? (If so, here's another one: The new WMT website is just as lame as the old one.)

An Open letter to WMT:

Rethink your decision regarding Greg. He got people thinking and talking -- which makes for great radio. Local radio needs Greg Alan. I just hope he will come back after how he was treated upon dismissal.

A very angry WMT listener.

Greg,

We need you back! Bob Bruce is like fingernails on a chalkboard. My radio is turned off at 4:00 p.m as of Monday. I now watch King of the Hill and The Simpsons.

WMT made a HUGE mistake!

Very poor choice on WMT's part. Bob is a blow head, somewhat interesting that anyone can go on like he does. Most of my listening time is from 6 to 8 in the morning so I really missed your show. The morining show is totally destroyed for which I have listened to for 30+ years. You were the best at stimulating my brain in the AM. I'm embarassed for WMT having someone a "SHINY NEW DIME" how CHEAP. I'm searching for new morning listening.

Greg,

Sorry to see you go, You were one of the major influences to me get me to listen to up until i heard your show what i thought was "boring" talk radio. You actually had alot of points and i agreed with many of them, the ones i didnt agree with, you at least made me make a concious effort to think about them and at least consider the other side of the coin... You are very well informed, present your arguments well, and even a bit arrogant at times, but thats what made me tune in even tho sometimes it bugged me... Hopefully you are able to stay in iowa and be on the airwaves close enough i can pick it up in Cedar Rapids... (Grabbing screwdriver to tweak the AM radio in my car for better reception of distant stations). Altho i do like Bob Bruce too, I will miss the arguments you bring to the table... Thanks for actually getting me to "listen" to AM talk radio..

Wish you the best of luck tho in wherever your journeys take you tho.

Greg,

Would you leave a post on your site to let us know what station you may be going to? Hope it's one close and if not close, then a station that has audio streaming.

You were great, at broadcasting. Talked about the current news. Had guests on your show. Had a sense of humor. Answered all of your e-mails before your day was through. Defended our military despite all of the negative things said about them, by the mainstream media.

Bruce must think we can't hear him as he tends to yell into the microphone. Guess he thinks we may be hard of hearing. *yawn*

You will be missed!!!

I too have been a listener for more years than I care to say. My folks listened when I was a kid and Chuck Worcester was the farm broadcaster.
Greg, so sorry to hear you are gone as I was out of town until Tuesday. I agree with Brittany, Bob Bruce ruined the morning show when he left, and ruined the afternoon show when he came back.
WMT just lost me as a faithful listener except for Sundays. Old habits die hard.
I have tried to go with the flow over the years of changing personalities, but letting you go was their biggest mistake.
Collins is rarely heard, it is commercials, news, markets, commercials, markets, a few words from Tom, farm markets, blah, blah, blah. IF I continue to listen I might get used to him, but I miss your great show.
God Bless you and your family. Do you need some funds to keep this blog going? I am sure most of us would chip in if we knew where to send the $. At least this way we can keep in touch.

Greg,

I am sorry to see you go. I agree with Julie and Brittany. I did not notice the crap so much when you did the morning show but I am having trouble listening now. I really don't care about the farm garbage and too much time is spent on that. Rather than listen to the Big Farm Show, I listen to Rush live on KXEL. WMT needs to loosen the purse strings in th AM and give away shiny new quarters. I wish success in your next position and am confident you will not wash out in three months.
