Minimum Wage Contest Update #1
Previous Post: $100 Minimum Wage Challenge!!!
I honestly was a little worried that a person would claim the prize on the first day. So far, no contestant meets eligibility I outlined. I've been sifting through the comments and emails...some of which I will publish later because there are some people actually mad at me for making a contest out of someone elses misery. I don't get that - because they'll get about a half-week's salary out of the deal for doing nothing! How can that be taking advantage of someone "barely scraping by?"
I've also had a few excuses from some people...saying that someone earning the minimum wage is working so hard, they probably don't have time to surf around on the internet or have access to an expensive computer. That may be. But I'm not asking them to submit their own name...I'm asking anyone who knows of them to submit on their behalf.
Let me be a little clearer, also - they must currently earn the minimum wage. I've had quite a few people send emails saying they used to earn the minimum wage. Great...so did I in 1984, but got a raise on my own in a matter of a couple of weeks.
It really shouldn't be that hard to find ONE person considering Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal's repeated comments:
First bill in '07 session would raise minimum wage
Meanwhile, The Corn Beltway Boys have entered the fray as well, ponying up another $50 bucks.
I really don't know what I'm getting into and/or how to handle other requests which may be similar, but if you want to put some more money in the kitty, just email me and I'll figure out a way to track it if it becomes popular to do so.
For now, the amounts are as follows:
$150 dollars to the person forwarding the name of a person who meets the eligibility as outlined.
$150 dollars to the minimum wage earning family
an additional $150 dollars if there are more than one person meeting eligibility in the family.
I guess if you want to donate more money to one particular aspect of the contest, you're welcome to do so. Who knows, it may become a nice full time job for someone? Again, just email me your request or offer and I'll try my best to track it. I suppose I'll have to work up an Excel spreadsheet if things progress well.
On with day #2...

"What difference will raising the minimum wage make? To most Iowans, the answer is 'Not much.' But to the 100,000 to 125,000 Iowans who earn the minimum wage —- seventy percent of whom are family breadwinnersAccounting for embellishment on his behalf, my math says there should be at least 50,000 possible Iowans who meet eligibility. I want just ONE NAME. Maybe I should contact him directly for a list of names...I dunno.
