Sodomy is now legal in South Carolina...my wife is not pleased. I told her that under the reasoning of the Supreme Court, I could get another wife. She is not pleased. I told her she could get another husband. She is pleased.

I fear for the country a little more today.

Okay, I know it's been a while, but I've just about had it with the WMD issue. Could someone please answer me at least one question?

If George W Bush is so smart as to be able to convince so many Americans (and Tony Blair, and others) that we needed to go to Iraq because he had Weapons of Mass Destruction...only to have "misled" us about the status of those Weapons of Mass Destruction...

Then, why wasn't he smart enough to plant a few there to maintain the ruse? Don't you think that if he "needed to lie" to get us into the Iraq thing...that maybe it would have been a good idea to covertly bring in some of the US stockpile of WMD's...just so they could at least find some?

Come on liberals...if you guys are so much smarter than the rest of us in just about anything (spending our money, educating our kids, creating jobs, etc)...how come you can't come up with something better than that?

Sorry, had to rant there for a moment. Should be a good show today.

Another weekend is past, and so is another year in the life of this radio guy...

I played golf yesterday and had the worst round of my year so far, absolutely disgusting. I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it if I picked it up and carried it there. It was the most beautiful day of the year, though, so there's something. I just hate when you have a spectacular weather day - no wind, no humidity, 85, and not a cloud in the sky - and you can't take advantage of it. Just last weekend, it was raining, sloppy, wet, and very slow at Rivertowne and I shoot a stinkin 84...go figure.

Today is my birthday. I am damn old...old enough to think back and remember my first day on the air as a "DJ"...picking up chicks who called for requests, getting to talk between records (yes, we played records in those days), and going out for a sandwich during a long song. When I think of where I came from and where I am now, it's amazing I'm still alive. They say if you last 5-years in radio, you can make a career out of it. That was 15-years ago. Yikes. Lot's of stories to tell about those days...perhaps some day I'll put them on paper. Someone's got to be interested just a little bit.

Oh well, back to work. Busy day today.

Whew...that's done. I just put my daughter to sleep after a looooong crying spell. That's what dads are for, though.

Ted Nugent was good today, he's got a great message and a real passion for what he believes...there's just a little too much self promotion in his motives. I understand that, of course, but I wonder how much listeners notice. I think that people accept that as a "cost of doing business" and are less affected by it...maybe I'm just so used to having people like that on that I notice too much. It's like any music DJ...the songs REALLY get tired after hearing them all day. I used to be an Oldies DJ and couldn't stand oldies music because I couldn't comprehend people enjoying stuff that I heard every day.

Anyway, Ted Nugent is just like he sounds...nice guy and supremely dedicated to his family. You can't fault him for that. Tank (the producer) couldn't get enough. Ted is a big hero to him. I told Tank to talk to him during a commercial break so he could get a few "private moments" with him. He was walking rather lightly afterwards. Tank is a very good kid. He's really working out well given the fact he began as an intern just using the opportunity of working at Clear Channel as a way to get school credit. We took him on as a full timer just this month...he's going to work out real well if he continues to learn and go "outside the box" in his daily duties.

I got an interesting call today from a local...someone who wants to be a talk radio host. Now, I'm not an elitist, but most people have no idea how hard talk radio is to do. Not EVERYONE with an opinion can be a talk radio host...but something about this guy leads me to believe he might actually have "the passion." Normally when Program Directors get these calls they shuffle them through massive amounts of paperwork to shoo them away....I don't. I listen to them, explain how hard it is, tell them what you need to be a successful host, and give them the inside skinny on the business. Here's a great list of the things it takes to be a successful radio host and some comments of my own:

1. An understanding of the audience. Who they are, what they're interested in, what kind of lifestyle the AUDIENCE is...not THE CALLERS!
2. Likeable...the audience may not like what the host has to say, but the host MUST be likeable.
3. Have an opinion about everything.
4. Willing to talk about their personal life and experiences...often to a degree they don't with their close friends and spouses.
5. Demonstrate a range of personality...serious, to humorous, outrageous, and back again...all within a span of 10 minutes.
6. Keep control of callers and direction of the show. Contrary to popular belief, talk radio is NOT topic oriented or CALLER oriented. Don't let callers steer the show in their direction...use CALLERS to steer the show in YOUR direction. YOU are the professional, the callers are useful only for your purposes.
7. Have passion and fun.

So I told the guy to do some stuff on a tape and send it to me...then, be willing to sit in the studio to see how it's done...then to be willing to do a show for free...then be able to prep for a different show each time (at least an hour of prep for every hour you're on)...then be willing to do a show without phone calls...then be able to take rejection and abuse...

I'll be waiting for the tape...IF he still has the passion. Lesson over.

Yikes! Today is yet another example of a really slow news day. Will this be the day I actually approach the topic of abortion? I'm trying to hold out as long as I can because I hate that debate...boring radio when you talk about abortion. The reason it might come up on the show today is the "big news" that Norma McCorvey wants to have the Supreme Court re-open the case. Norma was "Roe" in the Roe V Wade case everyone identifies with abortion politics. She wants to re-open the case because she's now a Christian and doesn't support abortion anymore. "Ouch" to the feminists. Of course, the major media isn't really highlighting this "news" very much. It really won't matter anyway if they do re-open the case...the NOW and NARAL people will find another way...

Come to think of it, it is rather boring radio...so no go on the abortion topic today. I might do the following:

1 - A really interesting story about a baby born to a female Marine during the Iraq war...in a combat zone. It's a first ever for the US and everyone is flipping out about it. I want to ask what she named the baby...

2 - The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that if you live in a crime ridden public housing complex (and who doesn't?)...the government can ban visitors to the complex...even if they're there at YOUR request...even if it's the father of your child...anyone. Wow.

3 - The SC DMV goes ON-LINE tomorrow...people can renew their license, get duplicates, pay fines, check their point status and more on the internet site (www.scdmvonline.com). One of the rules is you MUST provide your Social Security number...something that is against Federal Privacy Laws.

We'll see what happens today...

Okay, I made it through Father's Day. My first one...and it was actually rather boring. I took my lovely daughter to the Mount Pleasant Town Center and showed her off...then took in her first Disney movie, Finding Nemo. Not bad, but throughout the whole movie, all I could think of was about another movie playing at the same time...The Matrix 2. I haven't seen it yet, but I want to. Is this how it always is? Is this what it means to be "whipped?" I'm going to try and sneak out and see The Hulk this Friday.

Back at work today and I just put up a new webpoll on the 730wsc website about the smoking ordinance. I still maintain I am correct in thinking this is all a prelude to a new kind of prohibition. They've already started chipping away at alcohol (21 drinking age, .08, bar closing times) and I just think they'll eventually ban tobacco outright. Of course, there's nothing to prevent them from making a few bucks in the process. Imagine, obeying the law on smoking in bars and restaurants...you have to go outside, 15-foot perimeter around buildings...your standing there smoking, and along comes a copper with a ticket for loitering. Oh well...the first hearing is tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

I have to make a resolution to put some thoughts down every now and then here if I'm going to have the blog. It's being sort of test-run now, but the recent web activity has picked up and people are starting to pay attention to it...sorry, folks. I'll get better.

Didn't get to golf this weekend...and I missed the best weather so far for it. Work, work, work.
