Global Movement
How many ways can you dice this up?
Gore Announces 'Global Warming' Concerts
Power needs...with they all be green-friendly? Doubt it. Coal, oil, and other natural resources will have to be used in massive quantities in order to provide the electricity necessary to stage the events.
These people constantly tell us we need to do deed after deed after deed and endure mandate after mandate after mandate in order to conserve electricity. Isn't holding at least 8 simultaneous massive concerts like leaving one giant lightbulb on for hours when you're not really in the room?
Hydrocarbons used...for all the transportation to get there on behalf of the people who will actually go to the stadiums. Not to mention the private jets for the performers, helicopter rides for the really big stars, limos, and television aerial shot needs.
Trash generated...the last time around (Live 8 for world hunger - remember that?) left mountains of trash, unwanted food (ironic), and a virtual cess pool of goop that would otherwise not be there if they didn't hold the concerts.
Gaseous emissions...not including the hyperbole and downright untruths we'll hear from the performers (who I'm sure will be coached with talking points), that many people gathered in one place can't possibly be good for the carbon dioxide emissions, can it? Sure, I know they would otherwise be somewhere else emitting the greenhouse gas, but in a concentrated area...isn't it just like having a factory running?
Groundwater pollution...from the people who can't quite make it to the porta-potties either due to inebriation or carelessness. And, of course, the usual backlogs (pardon?) that form when there aren't enough facilities. Now, THAT's a global movement.
Noise pollution...we used to worry about that around the same time we were also worried about a new ice age. I think it was the 70's. I heard somewhere that the original Earth Day was somewhat inspired by the fear over global cooling. (See Reason Magazine article 2000: Earth Day, Then and Now)
Population boom...with all that moody music and the precendent set by Woodstock 69...Well, I don't have to go too much further on this one, do I?
I'm sure I could think of more, but I'll probably watch some of the concerts if they have another Pink Floyd reunion or if I can see the Police re-form again.
Either that, or to see the gangly Al Gore two-step and sweeping smooch move again...or maybe even the Macarena...

Gore Announces 'Global Warming' Concerts
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Al Gore announced on Thursday a series of worldwide concerts to focus on the threat of climate change, with a powerhouse lineup from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Snoop Dogg to Bon Jovi. How many ways? Let me attempt a partial list:
"In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people," the environmental activist, filmmaker and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee said in a statement. "The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement."
More than 100 performers are scheduled to appear at the July concerts, including Etheridge, the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Duran Duran, Korn, Pharrell, the Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
Promoters said the Live Earth concerts will take place in Shanghai, China; Johannesburg, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; London and cities to be announced in Japan, Brazil and the United States.
Promoters said the concerts _ dubbed Live Earth _ could reach 2 billion people through attendance or broadcasts. Proceeds will create a foundation to combat climate change led by The Alliance for Climate Protection, which is chaired by Gore.
